Our View from the Edge

Windacre Vineyard
After more than a five-year search for the perfect vineyard with pedigree, Peter and Diana Merriam purchased the Windacre Vineyard in 2000 and began blending French-style wines in the Russian River Valley. One of the oldest vineyards in Sonoma County, Windacre was originally planted in 1890. But it wasn’t until 1980 that the unique qualities of the property were considered for Bordeaux varietal wines, and merlot was planted. Situated in the warmest corner of the Russian River Valley appellation, where neighboring wineries are world-renowned for zinfandel, syrah, petite sirah, and other sturdy red wine varietals, the Windacre Vineyard is blessed with a climate strikingly similar to the Bordeaux region in France and is perfectly suited to grow Bordeaux grape varieties.

Los Amigos Vineyard

Merriam Vineyards celebrated spring 2009 with the planting of five acres of pinot noir and two acres of sauvignon blanc and semillon on the 12-acre estate Los Amigos Vineyard.  These plantings will constitute the core of the Burgundian-style wines of Merriam Vineyards.  The soil composition and cooler climate of Los Amigos Vineyard, perfectly suited for these varieties, allow Peter and Diana to grow the French-style wines that they love most. As pinot noir is Peter’s passion and sauvignon blanc Diana’s favorite, these estate plantings will serve as a constant reminder of their dream come true — to produce world-class wines in their own vineyards and winery.
